One of the most incredible moments of our time in Toronto was sitting through the table reading of the first episode with the entire cast. Seeing all the actors there, together, and hearing the entire script out loud, was amazing. Right there we started to see how much the actors were going to bring to these characters, and how exciting it was to see this story coming to life beyond the pages of the comics.

The end of the first trip
It was a cold week in this Canadian winter, and yet we all felt warm inside. Watching all the cast and crew work on the show was amazingly inspiring. I think in 2018 we’ll work harder than we ever did before.
Highlights of our trip included, besides being at the shoot and meeting everybody who's onboard in this adventure:
-seeing Chris, Andrew and Peter, talking about the Beguiling, TCAF and comics festivals around the World.
-having lunch with Jeff Lemire to catch up (plus having a look at his amazing collection of original art)
-meeting Francis Manapul and Tonci, catching up with Ramón Peréz and visiting the RAID studio
-watching a VERY exciting basketball game between the Toronto Raptor and the Golden State Warriors, with a very tense and incredible last quarter.

The pilot boys
“The boys” of the pilot. Director, DP and executive producers with their game faces on. It was fascinating to watch all these people work, every day, crafting every scene. These are the people who have to grasp how the entire episode work and have to have this bigger picture in mind while shooting every scene.

Liberty, Killjoys and EDITORS
Two of the recent covers I've done.
The first one is for the CBLDF's Liberty Annual 2013. The editor for this anthology changes every year and this one's Scott Allie. I did this cover and Fábio also has a little story in there. It will be out in October by Image Comics.

And also my variant cover for THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS #5, crazy mini series by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan. Edited by Sierra Hahn and published by Dark Horse, this will also be out in October.

There's a lesson to be learned here. Make friends with editors. Get to know their names, what books they edit, who they work with. If they like your work and they trust you, they'll get you cool gigs.

KILLJOYS 2
One of my most challenging occupations these days is making up variant covers for "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys", crazy new series written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon, with amazing art by Becky Cloonan, due to come out in June, after a quick appearance on FCBD in the coming weeks.
There're lots of characters, crazy places and lot's of stuff going on. It's been a pleasure being part of this adventure, being able to see where the story is going and help marking the way.
So here's my cover for the second issue, that should be out in July.

Umbrella Academy originals at SDCC 2012
San Diego Comic Con International is just around the corner, happening from July 11th to July 15th and, once again, Fábio and I will be there and share a booth with some amazing artist friends: Jill Thompson, Becky Cloonan, Andy Belanger and Rafael Albuquerque, plus the talented Murilo Martins.
We will have our books to sell this year. Umbrella Academy (both volumes), CASANOVA (Luxuria, Gula and the freshly compiled AVARITIA trade), our beloved Daytripper and more. Please stop by to check out any – or all – of the books.
And, as we have done in previous years, we'll have original artwork for sale ate our booth (and some with the nice folks of The Beguiling store over at the Drawn and Quarterly booth, very close to ours). And other pages I'll have are on this link.
Here's a preview of some of the Umbrella Academy pages I'll bring, from the amazing Apocalypse Suite series (click on the image to see a bigger version).

(this last page, page 07 from issue 4, is reserved already).
We'll put more updates before we travel, with signing information, panels, shows, Trickster and everything you need to know to find us on the big, crazy show. It's so close. Again.
See you all soon.

Killjoys
On July of 2010, during breakfast on the hotel inSan Diego, Gerard was showing me the concept images for My Chemical Romance's new album, "Danger Days: The true lives of the fabulous Killjoys". I got so excited with that, and considering that the same concept would turn into a comic he's gonna do with Becky Cloonan and Shaun Simon, I told him I'd make a drawing when the album came up, that could be used as an alternate cover for the comic or a poster or something.
Well, the album came out last november and my drawing ended up being a promotional poster on their U.S. tour, so I hear.
Here's a step-by-step production process of the drawing.

San Diego bound!
We had a wonderful time in London. The weather was incredibly sunny and everybody that we met were adorable. I joked I brought the sunny weather over from Brazil, but the warmth from the people was the nicest surprise of the trip. We certainly left wanting more, so thanks to all of you who we met, who we talked and who we touched during the past two weeks. The fact that I finished the very last page of Daytripper on my last day in London made the whole experience all the more special.

Now, the time has come again for that crazy thing (which I love) called SDCC. Many people are going, and once again we're excited and ready to rock it brazilian style. We'll share the same booth we had last year, booth #1320, with our usual pals Cliff Chiang (artist on the recent Greendale graphic novel) and Jill Thompson (the über talented artist of the recent Beasts of Burden series), and this year we'll be joined by Rafael Albuquerque (who's really showing some artistic skills on American Vampire) and Cris Peter (our colorist on our revitilized Casanova series).
We'll be there most of the time, signing books, selling copies of the new first issue of Casanova, and selling original art from series we've been working on, such as The Umbrella Academy, BPRD1947, DMZ and Sugarshock. Come around and look at all the lovely things everybody from our booth will have this time around.
Also, we'l be selling a limited signed giclée print that I made on our recent trip to Portugal, which comes in three sizes and looks like this:

Here's a detail. The prints come in small, medium and large sizes (come by the booth, they look sweet):

Our signings and panels schedule is quite full this time, jumping around all publishers we're currently working with. Here's the complete rundwon of where to find us when we're not at the booth:
Wednesday
6:60-7:30 - the EXCLUSIVE all-in Casanova signing with Matt Fraction, Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon
Thursday
11AM-12PM- PIXU signing with Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá at the Dark Horse booth
2-3PM - Signing at the DC booth
6PM - BPRD meet-up for BPRD members (at the Hilton Gaslamp - Terrace Foyer)
Friday
11AM-12PM - Signing at the DC booth
12-1:30PM - Hellboy and BPRD signing with Mike Mignola, Duncan Fegredo, Gabriel Bá, Fábio Moon and Patric Reynolds
5:30-6:30PM - Vertigo: on the Edge panel (room 6DE)
Saturday
11:15AM-12:15PM - Spotlight on Gerard Way with guests panel
1-2:30PM - Umbrella Academy signing with Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá (ticketed event: See Dark Horse employee for details)
3-4PM - Signing at the DC booth
Sunday
1:30-2:30PM - Signing at the DC booth
So, here we go again. I hope to discover a lot of new books, new artists, new people. This trip, for us, is always about discoveries. Are you ready?

Talking about the trip
"Have you ever realized how our lives can change at any given moment? Have you noticed how we can plan ahead all we want, but we're always surprised by the unexpected? And that, afterwards, we end up with a sum of moments, both good and bad, that really define who we are, what we want, and what we love? Well, such roller coasters of ordinary life happen every day, and that's what DAYTRIPPER is about."
That's part of our "On the Ledge" text that can be read on every Vertigo book this month and also here.
DAYTRIPPER is 10 issues mini-series and it's a story about life and all the little moments that ask the big questions. It's an adventure just like life itself, a journey where it's not so important where you're going, but how you get there.
Fábio and I are really excited about this. More than the day this idea struck me, more than the day the project was accepted, now the time has come for it to become a reality. We gave a long interview to Comic Book Resources almost a month ago about the series, but now this is actually happening and we want everyone to be there when it does!
I was talking to Gerard last week, chatting about life, traveling, comics and music, and we talked a lot about Daytripper. How could we not? Fábio had the camera ready and we got it all recorded, just so we could share this very special conversation about our very special project.
DAYTRIPPER #1 will be on the stands this wednesday, December 9th, and you should all go to your favorite comic-stores and be part of this story.

Umbrella Academy: DALLAS #4!
There's a preview of the fourth issue of Umbrella Academy: Dallas at the Comic Book Resources. You can check it out clicking HERE.
Below is the cover (DUH!).
Bá is making the best pages of his life and he's just begun drawing the last issue (as well as BPRD:1947 and God knows what else).
We've been very busy and very late here, but things have never seen better. We look ahead and I gotta say this: Looks good.

Neil Gaiman loves Umbrella Academy
Neil Gaiman, who needs no introduction, was being interviewed on NPR yesterday and said his favorite comic at the moment is Umbrella Academy, from Dark Horse comics.
Here's the link to the interview. Go to time marked 10 minutes and 25 seconds.
Quote: "I loved Umbrella Academy, which I enjoyed [to] no end."
- Neil Gaiman
This is pretty awesome.
