Brazil keeping us busy.

Dash Shaw came to Brazil last month (and he talks about it here and here) to promote Bottomless Belly Button and we ended up participating in two panels with him. After one of them, I drew this sketch of him while he was signing (above). the publicist from the publisher took a picture while I was doing the drawing

This week, we're busy (when are we not?). Bá is working on the third Daytripper cover, I'm drawing interior pages and we're getting ready for FIQ, a festival that happens in Belo Horizonte every two years. Ivan Brandon, Craig Thompson and Ben Templesmith are some of the guests this year besides us. Also, we're releasing the brazilian edition of The Umbrella Academy this week, and also the brazilian edition of PIXU. Vasilis and Becky are coming for the party, and they're staying so we can cook something up while we're here.

I hope that, before the end of the year, we'll have plenty of news to share of the possible future projects, but right now we're very excited with the projects we're currently working on, and we just want to focus on making Daytripper as great as we think it can be. From now until December, make sure you make your retailer order Daytripper, 'cause you won't want to miss on this ride. Two issues left on BPRD 1947 for the readers, so that's probably the Moon/Bá art fix until Daytripper hits. And the end of BPRD is totally worth it. It's AWESOME! Don't miss it.

33

They say 33 is a special age. I feel pretty special today, and I hope my brother knows how special he is too.

We feel like celebrating, and we will, but we also feel more like making awesome comics, which is what we've been doing most of the time instead of talking about our love for comics on the internet. I wish I had more time to scan and show sketches, talk about creation, fun stuff, but I rather make comics. They can tell you how awesome they are, and how fun, and how creative.

I can't stand not sharing something, so here is the step-by-step of our Buffy- Tales of the Vampires cover, which came out this week and has an amazing story by our best buddies Becky Cloonan and Vasilis Lolos.

1-The initial sketch: we considered doing one single image, but we ended up deciding the split image was cooler, moodier and easier to divide the chores between the both of us.

2- Bá studies his part of the cover: Both of us could do this part of the cover, or even the other one. But we felt the other one was simpler and it would gain some personality with my brush inking, so Bá went after the characters in the love-triangle (it's all about love for us here). It looks awesome as it is, right?

3-Black and white ink is GOD: We love inking, period. We love black and white.

4-Colors. Ta-DAM! We have been watching our pal Dave Stewart do his magic on our books and we've been dying to get a chance to do some color work to see what can we do with colors in our post-Dave period. I have to say I'm pretty happy with the results.
Buffy - Tales of the Vampires

Well, that's it, back to work, see you some day, thanks for reading.

Happy 33rd birthday, brother.

PIXU interview and preview.

We're focusing on drawing some pages, which is what we need to do right now. We want to work a little faster, and a little longer, and we want it to look its best, so we'll keep quiet for some days (or weeks). All for the sake of comics.

Two links related to our beloved group project, PIXU:

An interview with the four creators about working together and creating a complex horror story

A 17-page preview of PIXU, so you know what's in store when you have this beauty in your hands.

We just saw the design of the hardcover, and it will be awesome. It already is. We're so very proud of this story and we're thrilled it will be collected and in hardcover. Nothing says horror book more than a hardcover. Only maybe a dusty hardcover, but that will happen in time when you have your copy of PIXU in your shelf, and the years pass and you never open the book because you'll be scared of what is inside.

Wizard names PIXU Best Self Published comic of 2008

The indie collective of Becky Cloonan, Vasilis Lolos, Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon upped the ante on the self-publishing end with this minicomic chronicling the lives and deaths of the residents of a haunted house. With each horrific chapter created by a different artist, PIXU (Pee-shoo) holds together incredibly well and has us salivating for the second volume.

PIXU 2 is coming

This should do the trick.

With some delay, the art is done. When you read it, i hope you agree it was for the best. We self publish this thing, we do it because we love comics, we love to tell stories and we really believe in the work we do. At the end of the day, we are not a big corporation filling the monthly market of comic books, where the most important thing is to hit the scheduled slot on the comic-book shelves. At the end of the day, we do this because we love it and we want to share it with as many people as we can, and to better express our love we have to give it our best. Sometimes, our best takes more time than we anticipated, but it's something we'll be proud of. We already are.

The printer people are our pals (we have been using the same guys for three years now), so we'll try to get it done faster, so it's just a matter of time now. The hard work, the good work, the "I still can't believe I do this for a living" work, it's done.

And it's coming.

If you haven't ordered your copy, you can still do it online at Khepri.com ( click here). It's your safest bet to grab you PIXU, so hurry to get it before the PIXU gets you.

There and back again.

Home. Here we are, and we're safe, and we're happy.

And busy. We've been busy for a long time. We were very busy during the convention, as we were on previous years (maybe more), and being busy is a good sign, is a sign we're working, we're building something that hopefully will stand the test of time as worth of the reader's time. We work because we feel this need to tell stories, and being busy is a way of knowing that stories are being told. This year, above all, I felt that not only stories were being told, they were being read as well.

We work our best, but the job is only done when we find our readers, when they do their part, when they get the books and read the stories. Maybe they'll like it, maybe they won't. Every year, as we work more, I think it becomes easier to find our stuff and to read our stories. Having a body of work certainly makes it easier to be seen in this sea of artists and that's something most people don't realize. Doing comics is not easy and more often than not there are no overnight successes. It takes a long time, it's a long road, and you have to love it.

We do love it.

I still can't believe we won. It's overwhelming, it's flattering, it's unbelievable and, at the same time, undeniable. I remember well that, during the ceremony, I completely forgot to thank anyone, so say anyone's name, or to express my gratitude for these awards. I was holding myself from bursting into tears, I was high of happiness, and I was pumped by my love of Comics.

From that moment on, all I could think of was how bad I wanted to do more comics, and I hope that's the effect these awards have on people: this is it, you won, now get back to work and do it better, do it harder and do it for as long as you can. No words can really say how it feels, or how it felt for me, so I just want to work an keep doing what I love, and what it seems people also love, and have the work be my way of saying thanks.

It's great to belong. It's great to have friends. Nobody is an island, we were not made to be alone, and it's great to find people who can take this great trip along with you, people who share our love for comics, people who also want to do their best, who don't settle, don't give up and they always want to do more, and do it better.

These are great friends to have and I wouldn't have it any other way.

On the plane back, I started drawing. I couldn't help it, I couldn't wait any longer and I just did it, between the first and the second movie on the second and longer leg of my trip, and it was great. It's great to draw, to create and to share. I inked the drawing when I arrived home, 'cause the plane was too shaky. I knew this drawing world need good inking, 'cause these are friends you have to treat well. They're great, and I miss them already.

We have a second PIXU to finish now, and just too much more to list at the end of this narrative, and we just can't wait to get to it. We love comics, and we thank all of you for your tenderness and support.

Yes, she does.

Becky went on a trip for two weeks. Not, however, without spilling something about the future. If you wonder what the future holds, Becky knows.

Séance

Well, if it wasn't good enough to have Becky's amazing drawing of Kraken, now I was totally surprised by this "out-of-this-world" picture Vasilis did of Séance. Isn't it great?

I'm so haapy right now.
